A pulp and paper manufacturer was using brushes, powered by pneumatic actuators, to clean pulp from rollers in the paper making process. The high level of pulp particulates in the atmosphere was causing the pneumatic actuators to fail due to pulp intake in the actuators and in air lines resulting in seal failures and on-going maintenance. Actuators with external rail designs were considered but dismissed as possible replacements as they would also become clogged with pulp.
A pair of Tolomatic MXB-S electric belt drive actuators with solid bearing design replaced the pneumatic actuators in this application. The actuators employ a self-cleaning bearing design that cleans pulp away as it slides on the actuator extrusion. In addition, ends of the actuator are open to allow pulp to be easily pushed away. A stainless-steel gearbox combined with a stainless-steel motor was used to power the actuator to withstand the wet environment.
