Application Description: 
Lifting and lowering a wedge barrier

Challenge:
This customer was using hydraulic cylinders to lift and lower wedge barriers in their wedge barrier design. These installations consisted of hydraulic cylinders and pumps that offered inconsistent, and noisy operation. Also, the hydraulic components often leaked and required frequent maintenance to keep the equipment running properly. A cleaner, quieter solution was needed with reduced maintenance. Additionally, due to outdoor installations, the cylinders were required to operate in both warm and cold weather extremes. In cold weather, the cylinders required a warm-up period and the customer wanted to eliminate that process.

Tolomatic Solution:
The RSA rod-style actuator was chosen to replace the hydraulic system. The electric RSA solution provided the required speed as well as control, so noise was decreased by not only eliminating hydraulic pumps, but also from controlled stops reducing the "banging" of wedge plates when returning to the lowered position. Also, because the new system was electrical, the only maintenance required was utilization of the conveniently located grease fitting on the end of the rod.
