Rod-Style Actuators
Rodless Cylinders

Larger footprint: for a typical NFPA tie rod cylinder, 2" bore x 8" stroke, OAL when rod is extended is 21.75 in. (appr.)

The equivalent 2" bore x 8" stroke Tol-O-Matic rodless cylinder (BC220 series) is 14.3 in. Since the cylinder stroke is contained within the cylinder itself, there is a 34% smaller footprint! (Space savings varies with style and stoke selection.)

Minimal load support, especially when approaching end of stroke. The bending moment can cause seal and bearing wear and load deflection. (See the nervous fish.)

Load is supported throughout the entire stroke length. Using Tol-O-Matic’s sizing and selection software, My, Mx, and Mz are calculated and used to select the best rodless cylinder for the application. (See happy fish.)

Unequal piston areas; annular area effects force output, which is not equal in both directions. Example: 2" bore rod-style cylinder with 5/8" rod diameter exerts a theoretical 314.2 lbs of force extending, and 283.5 lbs retracting using 100 PSI—a 9.8% reduction. This effect is exaggerated with larger rod diameters: a 1" rod diameter on this 2" bore cylinder only exerts 236 lbs when retracting—a 25% reduction in force! Rodless cylinders have equal piston areas in both directions. There is no need to size the cylinder up to accommodate load variation in either direction. Machine design is optimized.

Rod rotation is a possibility, creating potentially unstable load control. (Now the fish are VERY nervous!)

Depending upon the product series selected, the load is generously supported through the stroke length with no possibility of rod rotation. (Happy, happy fish!)

Same-old/same-old application with rod-style cylinders. New and exciting (space saving and weight saving) possibilities with rodless cylinders!

Fish keep a wary eye on the process. All fish accounted for; 100% efficiency achieved.
